2 doors or 4?

The regular R is offered in 3 door and 5 door hatch configurations. I doubt VW offers both on the R400. Sales projections would have to be stratospheric for the niche for them to consider certifying 2 body styles!!

2 body styles would be sweet but this is clearly the best way to cut their losses from the start, keep it to one model and maybe even spec it up to a point there are few to choose from.

I would assume that they would go with the 3 door version. It would be a more aggressive and sporty look for the R400. This hatch isn't really playing to families.

3 vs 5 isn't about catering to families at all. Its about your stuff and your passengers. I personally find it a pain to always move the seats so someone can clamber into the back and scuff my seats with their dirty shoes...

US offered both
Canada did not

If that was how they did it before - U.S. offering both and canada didn't - chances are they could follow that same trend.

I'm kinda glad that there will be a five door because it is much more practical. The 3 door version does give a more sporty look though.

It's the smartest play on VW's part, no matter what with the R400, 3 or 5 doors they're pulling in folks who want performance but not the space, with 5 doors no one is getting left out. 5 doors spells MASS market appeal.

Also, Civic Type R is only available as a 5 door and the new Focus RS will only be offered as a 5 door. Staying with the segment it would seem...

Yeah, no need to reinvent the wheel. Clearly they all have reasons for taking that approach, serving multiple purposes and targeting multiple buyers types with one vehicle.

Best not to thin out their chances
